A colleague started a training course a few years back for a job that they had just got. As part of the introduction to the course everyone was encouraged to step forward, give their name, history etc., and also their hobbies. It was an IT related training course and when asked he gave surfing as his main interest He did not realise at the time that he should have qualified this with saying that he was actually a surfer of waves and not of the internet. It seems strange how some people when hearing the word ‘Surfing’ automatically associate it with the Internet, and not not with surfing waves on a surfboard (perhaps this may only seem strange to a surfer). Still, for the purpose of this site they could be both right. Here we are talking about surfing waves, the sport of surfing, the lifestyle of surfing. For the favoured few in the world, surfing’s elite such as Kelly Slater and Andy Irons (but to name two of many professional surfers out there), it is their job. For a greatly increasing amount of others it can be one of the most enjoyable pastimes there is.

The Best Way To Start Surfing

The best way to start surfing is to have great parents who before giving birth to you decided that they would settle down in Jeffrey’s Bay, The North Shore of Hawaii, Raglan or somewhere equally near great quality waves, and who as a fourth birthday present buy you your first surfboard. Unfortunately if you are reading this and do not already surf then it is probably a good few years too late. Still, lets not let that little setback hold you back. You may never become world champion but that does not matter one bit. As we always say – ‘the greatest fun can be had from a the smallest of wipe-outs!’. What you need to consider is how you can get yourself – complete with the equipment you need – to where there are waves.

I guess how you start surfing can be pretty different for everyone. Personally, we here think that the best way to start surfing is with your mates. It does not matter whether they can actually surf or not, the important thing is about having fun. Becoming a good surfer takes an awfully long time and a hell of a lot of practice.

You will forget about how many times you have fallen off or how many mornings following a day of surfing that you wake up hardly able to move your stiff arms. If you happen to be a coastal dweller of Hawaii, Australia or similar you will not need to be reading these pages – surfing is a way of life. Your dad surfs, your mates surf – even your little sister surfs. That is just the way it is. If you happen to live in Arizona then it is a little different. If you are land locked then the best start is to arrange a trip with a friend or two with the sole purpose of giving surfing a try. If you are lucky enough to have a mate who can lend you his surfboard for a try then all the better. If not you are looking at having to hire the surfing equipment you need, or taking part in an arranged surfing lesson or two. Surf schools are springing up all over the place (although not quite sure about Arizona yet!). It is not a good idea to get all the gear before you actually find out if you like it or not – there is a considerable cost in getting yourself kitted out for full time surfing.

Check out the sections on The Surfboard, The Wetsuit (if it’s gonna be cold!) and Surfboard Accessories. If you do not have anyone experienced to help you out, or if you are taking a lesson and want something to start you off then check the Beginners Guide. The information here should help you get off to a good start, and mean that you do not have to stare blankly when someone mentions that you need to duck dive! (you may want to have a look at the Surf Talk section to learn some of the useful surfing lingo around).

Driving up US 19 through Dunedin, Florida, just above Tampa Bay, you would never suspect that adjacent to the coast is a wonderful undeveloped State Park on an island with a virgin pine forest.

Honeymoon Island State Park sits at the west end of Curlew Road (Hwy 586). A long curving causeway with beaches of its own takes you out to the island. It’s a popular park, but there’s plenty of room for everyone with several miles of beaches, including nature trails, a beach set aside for dogs and shallow-water grass flats that are teeming with fish and perfect for wade-fishing.

After driving through the congestion and noise of US 19, it’s a great relief to arrive on Honeymoon Island, park the car, and go for a long walk. You can take a long walk on the beach, or go for a hike through the pine forest. If you enjoy birding, don’t miss walking through the pines on the ¼ mile Osprey Trail along the side of the island facing St. Joseph Sound. If you’d like a guided tour, the park rangers offer a guided hike through the pines on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. through the end of February. The highlight of the walk for me was seeing and hearing two large great-horned owls calling from the top of the tall pines.

And don’t miss the Rotary Centennial Nature Center with its observation deck overlooking both St. Joseph Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. The nature center provides educational exhibits to teach us about the history and nature of Honeymoon Island and the nearby Caladesi Island. And I can tell you that the history of both islands is quite interesting, from hog farmers to honeymooners.

On the Gulf side of the island you’ll find a long curving beach that is currently undergoing renourishment. That means tons of fluffy white sand are being brought in from offshore to augment the beach, which is currently narrow and rocky in places.

The first time I ever visited Honeymoon Island, I was surprised to find so many nice shells, sponges, and sea whips on the beach. So I can tell you for sure that Honeymoon Island is a great place for shelling, especially during the winter months or after a storm passes.

Honeymoon island is also the gateway to Caladesi Island State Park, just a stone’s throw across Hurricane Pass. Near the entrance to Honeymoon Island is the ferry to Caladesi which runs regularly all day between the two islands. The trip to Caladesi is a must if you have the time, but I’ll save the details on Caladesi for another day.

“Backpacker” was originally a slang term from the 1980s for a graffiti artist who always wore a backpack containing his music collection and, more importantly, his spraypaint cans, markers, and spray tips. Typically, the music collection would consist only of local underground rap/hip-hop music artists. The sub-genre or sub-categorization of the music means nothing, as long as they are a local unsigned (no recording contract) artist. A backpacker’s music selections are based upon three principles: 1) no mainstream, 2)

the music is commercially unavailable, and 3) the music was given/sold to them “hand-to-hand” from the originating recording artist. However, these principles eventually became very loose, and soon many people who listened to commercially available underground rap or “indie rap” became known as “backpackers.

The term gradually came to refer to someone with this musical taste, and now has almost nothing to do with graffiti (although certain “backpackers” may participate in graffiti “tagging.”)

Many hip-hop listeners from the 1980s and early 1990s believe that since the rise of the Internet has made it easier to acquire music that was once localized, the underground has died along with backpackers and their three main principles, hence this modernized definition incorporating Independent rap/hip-hop music and locality of artists became less useful. Hip-hop listeners of twenty or more years often disagree on the definition of “backpacker” with the new era of listeners who haven’t experienced hip-hop without the Internet.

The first issue of Backpacker appeared in the spring of 1973. The editor’s note written by founding editor William Kemsley explains, “It took us three years to put together the first issue of Backpacker. In that time we debated some serious questions among ourselves.” The note describes the founding editors’ worries that America in the early 1970s did not contain a backpacking community large enough to support a magazine. It also expresses Kemsley’s goal to support the magazine primarily through subscriptions rather than advertising.

The Winter/Spring 2007 issue of the journal Appalachia includes an essay by Kemsley in which he describes how he developed the idea to create a magazine about backpacking. The article, titled “How the 1970s Backpacking Boom Burst Upon Us,” explains several pivotal moments that showed Kemlsey that an audience could exist for such a magazine.

Backpacker was owned first by Kemsley, who sold it to Ziff Davis in 1980, which sold it to CBS Publishing. In the late 1980s, it was bought by Rodale Press, which also publishes Men’s Health, Bicycling, and Runner’s World. In May 2007 Rodale sold Backpacker to Active Interest Media and the magazine moved to Boulder, CO in August 2007.

On May 17, 2007 Active Interest Media, an El Segundo, CA-based magazine publisher, announced that it would buy Backpacker magazine from Rodale Press. Active Interest Media, which also publishes Yoga Journal and American Cowboy, moved Backpacker to Boulder, CO in the summer of 2007, and Jon Dorn continues to lead the magazine as editor-in-chief.

Backpacker publishes nine issues per year, which includes an annual gear guide in March. Combined issues are published for January-February, July-August, and November-December. The magazine is divided into the service-centric Basecamp section (which won a National Magazine Award for 2005), a feature well, a gear review section, and concludes with maps of local trails corresponding to six regional editions. Every April Backpacker presents its “Editors Choice” awards to highlight the best gear of the year.

Starting in 2004 Backpacker began publishing regional editions of the magazine that include map cards for local trails. The regional concept developed from survey results that showed the magazine’s readers were interested in hikes near where they lived. It discontinued these map cards in the April 2008 as part of their effort to become a 100% carbon neutral magazine. The regional sections are now on-line. An all digital version of the magazine was also made available.

In November 2006 Backpacker began posting podcasts and videos on its website to complement the content that appears in the magazine issues. Additional videos appear on Backpacker’s YouTube channel.

In April 2007 Backpacker received its third National Magazine Award nomination in two years, this time in the single-topic issue category for its October 2006 “Survival” issue. National Magazine Awards are presented each May by the American Society of Magazine Editors, and are considered the magazine industry’s highest editorial honor. Also in 2006 Backpacker received the MIN Best of the Web award in the Uses of Interactivity category for the backpacker.com/hikes website.

In May 2008 Backpacker won a first-ever National Magazine Award for “General Excellence” in the circulation category, 250,000 to 500,000. To win this honor, Backpacker beat national magazines like Cookie, New York, Wondertime, and W.

The sun hadn’t even started to rise over the Quabbin Reservoir before would-be anglers arrived for the recent opening day of fishing season, their boats lined up at its three launch areas. It’s a testament to the popularity of the western Massachusetts reservoir, a mecca for hikers, bicyclists, fishing enthusiasts and other nature lovers drawn to what’s become known over the decades as the “accidental wilderness.”

The Quabbin Visitor Center, which looks north over the 18-mile-long reservoir, hosts a steady stream of year-around guests with questions about the region’s offerings and history.

“Its reputation has really grown as a popular and beautiful spot,” said Clifton Read, who heads education programs at the visitor center. “The view from here, especially from the Enfield Lookout, is really dramatic in all seasons and especially in fall.”

The Quabbin, which holds up to 412 billion gallons of water, sits in what once was a valley of four rural towns. They were dissolved in 1938 and the structures that weren’t hauled away in pieces by their owners were razed to make way for the reservoir.

For many travelers, a visit to the Quabbin is part of a larger jaunt to tour the region’s historical sites, university campuses, museums, orchards and country stores, antique markets, bistros and ecotours.

The Quabbin Visitor Center’s guest book sports signatures from throughout New England and as far away as Europe. Some guests are daytrippers or weekend visitors, while others stop to explore the area while traveling between New York, Hartford, Boston and other urban destinations.

Many visitor center guests come seeking Quabbin maps and trail guides or tips on the best viewing spots for spring wildflowers, autumn leaf-peeping and bald eagles in winter.

Other visitors linger to read about the industrial marvels of the reservoir’s creation, or the history of the four towns dissolved in April 1938 to make way for the freshwater lake.

Some come just for the solitude.

“It’s a place of peace and serenity for us to get away from the noise of the outside world,” said Robert Langlois of nearby Brookfield, visiting on a recent day with his wife, Elena, and their 8-year-old neighbor, Meghan Edwards.

The Quabbin, one of the nation’s largest manmade water sources, is about 150 feet deep on average and is home to 27 species of fish.

Swimming, bonfires, camping and domestic animals are prohibited – one of several measures to ensure the water’s quality – and limits are strictly enforced on the types of boats allowed and their engine sizes.

Many of the visitors pack a lunch, don their hiking boots and explore the region on foot. Among the most popular sites: the former town common at Dana, one of the four “lost towns” dissolved in 1938.

The area, reachable with a stroll of less than 2 miles on the reservoir’s eastern side, is still dotted with the cellar holes, foundations and stone walls of the buildings that once populated the small town.

It’s now part of the reservoir’s protected watershed. Bicyclists and hikers are welcome, but motorized vehicles and domestic pets are prohibited.

For those interested in the cultural and historic roots of Dana and other area towns, the Swift River Valley Historical Society in nearby New Salem also is a popular spot.

Its headquarters – open Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from June 1 to Oct. 12 – receives scores of visitors yearly seeking old vital records from the four dissolved towns along with journals, donated family mementos and other genealogical treasures.

“The area is a wonderful little piece of New England,” said Elizabeth Peirce, the historical society’s president and curator. “There’s a great deal of interest among our visitors in learning more about a time that isn’t anymore.”

History

Thru-hiking’s origins date back many years, when long-distance foot travel as a means of transportation began to merge with hiking for its own enjoyment and as a means of seeing the world.

One famous thru-hike involves the story of Lillian Alling, a young 27-year old Russian immigrant living in New York City, who became homesick and decided to return to her family in Russia. Lacking funds, but armed with a strong will, she chose to walk the 12,000 miles to Russia, traversing Canada and into Alaska [1]. She was last seen preparing to cross by boat at the Bering Strait to Siberia[1].

After the completion of the Appalachian Trail, a thru-hiker named George W. Outerbridge completed the first section hike of the newly completed AT in 1939; trail promoter Myron Avery had previously section-hiked during the process of trail blazing.

In 1948, Earl Shaffer became the first to have publicly thru-hiked the AT [2]. A 1994 report claiming that a group of Boy Scouts had done so twelve years earlier has never been adequately documented and is considered highly suspect in most hiking circles (see Appalachian Trail).

A number of thru-hikers have achieved a measure of celebrity in backpacking culture. Perhaps the most famous was Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, who first thru-hiked the trail in 1955 at age 67, with what even at that time was considered extremely inadequate gear, including sneakers rather than boots and a blanket rather than a sleeping bag[3] ; she later completed a second thru-hike and a full section hike and is recognized today as a pioneer of ultralight backpacking.

Thru-hiking today

A hiker who has just completed the Appalachian Trail

Thru-hiking a trail is a long and difficult journey: An AT thru-hike, for example, requires at least several months, covering over 2,100 miles. Thru-hikers typically organize supplies for the journey far in advance, and have friends and family mail packages to predetermined stops along the way, to be picked up as poste restante.

Many people without time or interest in thru-hiking instead choose to section hike a trail, completing it piece by piece, often over many years.

With the rise of backpacking in the United States, thru-hiking, at first considered impossible and later highly eccentric, has become a minor industry. Thousands of hikers attempt to thru-hike the AT every year, although by some estimates less than 20% complete the entire trail. Roughly 150 end-to-end the (much shorter) Long Trail, and about 180 thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail, each year. Some dedicated thru-hikers complete a trail more than once; about 30 have reported hiking the AT at least three times. Lee Barry became the oldest to thru-hike the AT when he completed a thru-hike (his second) in 2004 at age 81[4].

In recent years, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy has reported completion rates around 25%, after several years under 20%[5]. They attribute this to slightly lower numbers of hikers, as well as better gear, and thanks to the internet, information about gear, causing fewer hikers to start with 60 to 80 pound packs and drop out a few miles in[5].

Thru-hiking in popular culture

American author Bill Bryson had a bestseller in 1998 with A Walk in the Woods, the story of his own attempt to thru-hike the AT.
